Milazzo Film Festival is the City of Milazzo’s official film festival. It includes a film showcase, an International Short Film Competition, a Feature Film Competition, and the “Scarabeo d’Argento” Award.

Founded in 2006, it is organized by the “L’Altra Milazzo” Association. The MFF aims to promote the seventh art as a tool for the cultural growth of the territory. Each edition, inspired by current events, creates a program filled with screenings, meetings, and debates led by famous actors, writers, and artists from the Italian scene.

The competition aims to provide expressive space for independent filmmakers from around the world who, drawing from personal inspirations and reflections, explore new perspectives on contemporary issues. The short film competition traditionally consists of two sections: free-theme short films and, in collaboration with the Capo Milazzo Marine Area, a section focusing on environmental sustainability and marine protection. The “Attilio Liga” feature film competition – Starting in 2025, the MFF will create another competition, named after the late Milazzo entrepreneur, dedicated to feature films and documentaries, with a new category selected each year by the Committee. As part of the Film Review, each edition of the MFF showcases a range of themes related to current events, anniversaries, and culture in general. The Festival hosts actors, directors, writers, intellectuals, artists, film critics, and journalists every year. For the 2025 edition, the Artistic Direction of the MFF will be entrusted to Mario Sesti and Caterina Taricano, curators of various festivals, journalists, and film critics. The program is also shaped with the support of the Scientific Committee, composed of Professors Federico Vitella, Laura Busetta, and Enrico Nicosia, faculty members of the DAMS department at the University of Messina.

Since the 2021 edition, a special section has been introduced within the International Short Film Competition, dedicated to short films focused on the protection and preservation of the sea and the environment. This is an important opportunity to raise awareness among our audience on environmental sustainability issues.

The MFF awards the “Scarabeo d’Argento” each year, a good luck emblem of the City of Milazzo, to an artist who has distinguished themselves on the scene for artistic and cultural merits. Massimo Dapporto, Barbara Bouchet, Sandra Milo, Stefano Reali, Ninni Bruschetta, Stefano Fresi, Alessandra Sardoni, Marco Tullio Giordana, Gloria Satta, Marco Dentici and Giulio Scarpati are the artists who have been awarded on the MFF stage since 2006. This year, the organizing committee will also present the award, exclusively created by the master jeweler Antonello Piccione.

The culture of cinema is rich with studies, tributes, and an extensive critical literature on directors. However, this is not the case for those we first encounter with our eyes on a screen or stage: the actors. Since its tenth edition, the artistic direction of the MFF decided to do something unprecedented, at least in Italy: to dedicate an entire event to the art, craft, and dream of the actor, firstly by rewarding excellence and discoveries in acting, and by giving face and voice to the people behind those roles, subjects of a precise and often bumpy journey, which has led them to that focal point of attention and love that ignites in viewers when they recognize the authenticity and uniqueness that makes a character unmistakable and sometimes irreplaceable.

Since 2022, all promotional material has been printed on FSC-certified paper, and starting from 2025, in collaboration with private partners, the Milazzo Film Festival forest will be created, contributing to the reforestation of an area in our territory and the reduction of CO2. Since 2021, the MFF has been plastic-free, having eliminated the use of plastic bottles and cups, and using only “H2O L’Acqua” dispensers.
